The Asian Koel is a large Koel with a melodious voice. It is the most common Cuckoo species in Kerala . The bird exhibits sexual dimorphism in plumage. The male of this species is black with red eyes while the female is grey with plenty of spots. They are found in the Indian Subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The bird is often mentioned in Indian Books. The Asian Koel is an omnivore and feasts on insects as well as Guavas, Papayas, Cashews etc. The Asian Koel forages alone or in pairs. Groups of 3 or four Koels are also not rare. The Asian Koel is brood parasite and lays its eggs in the nest of other birds. The Asian Koel male sings a lot during the breeding season. The breeding season is from February to June in Kerala. These months are chosen for breeding because most of the birds in the cuckoo’s brood parasite list breed during this time of the year. Some of the birds in the Asian Koel’s list for brood parasitism. 1.Black Drongo 2.House Crow 3. Red Whiskered Bulbul 4. Red Vented Bulbul The bird is an extremely common breeding resident of the DLF Apartments and seem to be most common at the Backside marshes. The handsome and beautiful Cuckoo pair I saw today were perched on a small tree with many branches at the east side of the Backside Marshes of the DLF Apartments at Kakkanad. They were not calling and were preening in the coolness of those trees.
