****Rare. Very nice find earlier today by the Goetz family (Phil and Christopher), identified by Andy Guthrie. One of only a handful of individuals in eBird for the county. Came out to the spit mainly for this bird. Once I arrived, Andy Guthrie, Mike Gullo, Laurie Mattle, and Jim Miles were all on the bird. It spent it time with all the other shorebirds on the lake side of the island, flushing to the bay side for a very short amount of time before returning back to the lake. It also spent a short amount of time on the mud/algae-flat and almost all the time in the water. County bird! Originally reported as Red-necked, but was later identified as Red. I have very limited experience with the two, especially in this plumage. Obvious phalarope, thick bill, and thick head and body overall make sense for Red. Eyepatch extending into auricular, molting coverts, other back feathers mostly black with some gold edging, and light chestnut wash around neck and upper breast. Still present as I left, but unsure of the effect the Peregrine had on the birds.
