Detalhes da observação
*Rare; astounding CBC find; extremely difficult in Westchester away from CPP and quite rare anywhere in winter. A personally very satisfying bird to stumble upon given my extraordinarily poor luck with this species, having only seen one in Apr. 2023 at Croton after missing them on upwards of 20 occasions. Flushed from the edge of Kaysal Ct where the little "river" of th wetland that runs along the side of the road had some pockets of open water despite the temps. I have no idea how it found this sliver of mediocre habitat, but it was probably freezing its tail feathers off in the icy water and heavy snow. After it flushed, Phil followed its flight and called it out as a snipe. Reed and I had heard it give its short, gruff call, but neither of us could place a finger on the ID since we so rarely encounter WISN. Eventually we got excellent views as it hunkered in a small crack in the ice along the shore, and it stayed put for five minutes until it was flushed by a foraging RUBL that started prodding at it (not a line I ever thought I'd get to write!). It was crazy seeing RUBL and WISN next to one another, and I was shocked to see they were approximately the same size. Photos to come, including of it getting flushed by the RUBL
