The picture showing this bird's tail feathers at feeder was taken last week. It was only today that I could conclude it was a male yellow-shafted flicker and not an intergrade when I finally saw the head showing the black malar and brown face and the red heart-shaped mark on nape. It is a very skittish bird only occasionally coming to the front yard feeder and quickly disappearing when there is movement in the house seen through the window.
