Detalhes da observação
Continuing in the cattail/grassy marsh on the east side of the Eighteenmile Creek main channel. I set up on the edge of the marsh and simply listened (and recorded) without using playback or any other means of attempting to elicit vocalizations. At 6:32 the first rail grunt series was heard at close range, possibly as a response to a loud splash (beaver?) nearby (first attached recording); at 6:56, another grunt series (second attached recording) was heard originating from a location about 35 yards upstream / northeast of the first location (this grunting series was a notably higher pitch than the first); at 7:08, three separate grunting series were heard in quick succession and from three different locations spanning a total distance of about 70 yards (clearly indicative of three different individuals; third attached recording); at 7:15, another grunt series was heard from a location downstream / southwest of the first location. Although the third bird is very faint in the third recording (at about 0:21), it was heard well in person. In the fourth attached recording (ML621186958), I believe the short notes also belong to King Rail (and they were clearly originating from within the main marsh vegetation), and I would be enlightened if someone could either confirm or refute this inference. Altogether, King Rail vocalizations were heard originating from four discrete locations.
