Detalhes da observação
Initially relocated by Richard Liebler at ~09:50 near the 3 mile mark here: 29.3743218, -94.8375078 In the vicinity of the Noah Welsh boat ramp on the south side of the dike mixed with a flock of Sanderling and Turnstones. Originally photographed on March 14th. Dunlin-shaped Calidrid with bright orange base to the lower mandible. Greenish-yellow legs,.at times appearing slightly orangey, somewhat squat. Mauve colored upperparts and breast with white belly. Arrowhead streaking on the flanks Longish bill tapering and drooping significantly towards the tip. Slightly larger than a Sanderling. Silent. Foraging among rocks at water's edge. Transitioning into alternate plumage, with pale supercilium coming in and darker auricular spot. Brightness of bill base, along with shape of flanks streaking and lack of extensive rufecent tones on the head and back all strongly suggest Purple rather than Rock. As does the precedent for records in the Gulf (I believe there are no records of Rock Sandpiper East of the Salton Sea, and many Purple Sandpiper records in the Gulf and Interior US).
