Detalhes da observação
Astounding find this morning by Ellen Plane and Allison Su (thanks for the timely report and directions on where to start looking!) Jack H, Dan S, Ed Y, Erica R, and Alex H had gotten on it while I was looking at the wrong sparrow flock; not sure which of them had found the bird, but thanks Alex for flagging me down. Bird would apparently come out into the open and be quite cooperative for a few to 10 minutes at a time, then disappear into the scrub for 20 or 30 at a time. Tended to stay low except when singing, and even then was only about 4' off the ground. Very low-contrast sparrow akin to brewers or especially drab grasshopper. Kinda flat-headed, some streaking on flanks but not on breast, a little smudging on sides of throat. Maybe a few hints of rust on face, but not well demarcated anywhere. Dark centers to coverts, but generally all beige-looking in field. Photos show more dramatic scaling in the wings, and subtle red patterning on back. Complex, somewhat buzzy song. Lifer!! Seen with mob
