At stop # 4 (1.3), a barred owl gave a hoot-hoot-hoot-hoo-hoo-aw call from fairly close range to the NE of me immediately (i.e., less than 1 sec) after I finished my first bout of NSWO tooting (i.e., in the 6th minute). It gave another about 8 sec later. It gave a third just as I started my second bout--I got a single toot out before the owl "interrupted" me. I stopped immediately, and then gave my second bout ten sec after the owl was done with that call. At the 8:45 mark (i.e., 1 minute after I finished my third and final bout of tooting), the owl gave another similar hooting series. This recording includes the first two of the four calls. You can hear the tail end of my NSWO toot at the very start of the cut.

It gave another about 8 sec later. It gave a third just as I started my second bout--I got a single toot out before the owl "interrupted" me. I stopped immediately, and then gave my second bout ten sec after the owl was done with that call. At the 8:45 mark (i.e., > 1 minute after I finished my third and final bout of tooting), the owl gave another similar hooting series. At the next stop (#5), a barred owl gave two solo long hoots to the SW of me during the 4th minute. The distance and direction suggested it was very possibly the same owl I'd heard on the previous stop. At the start of the 6th minute, apparently the same owl gave a third SLH from the same area. Very soon, a second owl began calling from a greater distance to the SSW, giving one "who cooks for you" singlet, and two WCFY doublets over the next 2.5 minutes. Finally, just as the 10-min alarm was going off on my watch, I heard a SLH close by to the SW. I assumed it was the first bird heard at this stop, and probably the same heard at the previous stop.
