Detalhes da observação
Classic looking male, black and white, with red cap and throat. Large, elongated white patch on wings. 50 feet up in tree. Hopping around trunks of tall, deciduous multi-trunk trees (birch?) near river. Calling repeatedly as it pecked at and moved up and around the trunk. Each time, as it flew to a new trunk (only a foot or two away), it would give out a call that was slightly higher pitched and quicker, somewhat squeaky. Regular calls every 4-6 seconds at first, then a break, then every 12 seconds. Perhaps related to the Blue Jays bothering it at first? Seen at Piscataqua River pedestrian bridge, on the trail leading to the high school and community park, just before crossing the bridge, on the left.
