Detalhes da observação
News on the hill was of a Malayan Whistling-thrush coming out of the forest gully and into the feeding station at the bottom of Jalan Lady Maxwell. Remarkably, within a minute of arriving at the spot a Whistling-thrush hopped out in full view. The bird showed no signs of fear and we were able to approach to a few metres and snap photos with handphone on 4x magnification. The upper mandible had a distinctive dark culmen line and I initially thought that this was diagnostic of Malayan, but the bill was larger than Malayan I have previously seen, and there was too much yellow on the upper mandebile too. The lower mandebile was all yellow. In good light, the bird also had some bluish spotting on the breast. During the observation period, the bird was continuously fanning its tail. Initially I wanted this bird to be Malayan, but on reflection and looking at the size (and overall coloration) of the bill, I concluded it was in fact a Myophonus caeruleus of the duller subspecies dicrorhynchus.
