Detalhes da observação
Started this search yesterday, exploring a new area of Harriman. We came across this spot with high hopes and great habitat. The little grove was littered with Red Cedars, White Pines, and a handful of Japanese Black Pines. The search did not produce any owls, BUT, we did find multiple pellets and white wash that was characteristically Saw-whet in nature. The pellets were small and the dissection showed it very densely packed with bones and two skulls, one a shrew and one a mouse. Both skulls were missing the back half, the jaws were still in the skull, and the skulls were in line with the pellets. All indicative of NSWO over ESOW. This leads to tonight. I returned to try my luck and listen. About 30 minutes into my stay, I got a reply from way back of the grove. No repeated toots, just the “weeeEEEE”. It gave 3 calls and went silent. Photos are from pellet dissection on Sunday.
