Detalhes da observação
The bird appeared to be a first-winter “American” Brant. The goose was small and was similar in size to the surrounding “Richardson’s” Cackling Geese. The head and neck of the bird were black with small white patches on either side of the neck just below the head. The upperparts were light gray contrasting strongly with the back on the neck. The shoulders and upper wing coverts were similar in color with much darker (blackish) flight feathers. I did not see the bird fly, but at one point it did stretch its right wing. The feathers of the shoulder and wing coverts were widely edged with paler gray. The belly through to the legs was pale grayish-tan with some gray on the center of the upper belly bordering the black of the breast. From the legs through the undertail coverts was bright white and unmarked. The uppertail coverts were likewise bright white. The tail was black and unmarked. The bill, legs and feet were also black.
