Ants can be seen in the nest and on the hatchlings. The young ones were very passive.
Detalhes da observação
This is a series of images and video from the same observation. I was recording this particular nest for a few days and the parents were making multiple forays with grubs/spiders/caterpillars etc to feed the 5 hatchlings. On this day the parents were very vocal and would fly upto the nest entrance and then fly away and sit a few feet away and continue to call. This went on for few times and I realised that either the chicks were unresponsive to the feeding or the were not in the nest. I finally checked the nest cavity and observed that it was overrun by red ants, which were all over the chicks as well. The chicks appeared to be under attack or too weak to open their beaks for the food. It is possible that this deterred the parents from entering the nest cavity. One of the parent would sit and fluff and flutter its wings while carrying food and vocalising. This it did on other days when the Greater Coucal was around the nest too. This day I think it was an alarm display due to the ants. I left the nest as is and late in the evening observed the parents readily entering the nest cavity with food and leaving without the food. This indicated that the chicks ( at least some of them ) were alive. My last observation into the nest was on 01st Aug 2021 and I was delighted to see that all chick were alive (5 nos) and were sprouting feathers. It appears the red ants did not harm the chicks or the chicks/parents were able to repel them.
