Detalhes da observação
In between the first and second parking lots there’s a mud flat that has a cut grass leading to it starting from the road. In that, there are a few hundred shorebirds along with these Western Sandpipers. They had rufous crown and ear coverts which stood out fairly well along with some on the scapulars as well. Had the classic long downcurved bill with no red at the base like a White-Rumped. One did have a longer bill than the other. We noticed that the spotting was different than white-rumped; thicker and arrow shaped. Definitely weren’t as elongated as white rumps either. The most important factor though, was the fact that in flight they had a dark stripe going down the rump officially canceling out White-Rumped.
