Detalhes da observação
2nd state record found yesterday by visiting birder Carole Seville Brown. I arrived to find Doug Hitchcox, Pat Moynahan, and Marian Zimmerman all departing and having seen the bird. We returned to the point and relocated the bird with little trouble. A stunning alternate plumage male, with rich chestnut nape, black breast and belly, black crown, black line behind the eye set-off by white line above it, and yellow washed chin and throat. The back and wings were brown, with the back darker streaked. The bill was blue-gray and had an upturned appearance due to the shape of the mandible rising to meet the maxilla. The legs and feet were purplish-brown, and a very long hind claw was evident. The tail was short and heavily abraded. The outer rectrices were mostly white and some dark tips to inner rectrices could be seen, but the classic pattern of Chestnut-colored was obliterated by the wear. Still, in flight the bird showed a lot of white in the tail. The primaries did not extend far beyond the heavily abraded tertials. The bird captured a few small light tan moths and otherwise stayed in small open patches amidst the burned over section of the point, mostly not staying in the lowest grass along the paths, although there at times. It also would perch on the rocks over the edge of the bluff at times. When flushed, I did hear the familiar "kiddle" call.
