A spectacular Purple Swamphen bathing - it seems to be having fun!. The spectacular Purple Swamphen (Porphyrio porphyrio) is a large, common waterbird in the rail family. Unlike other rails it is brightly coloured, with an oversized red beak and frontal shield and an iridescent purple and blue neck. Purple Swamphens are mainly seen near rushes at the edge of the water, but also like to graze on areas of mown grass. This Swamphen entered the shallows of Loch McNess in Yanchep National Park to bathe energetically and then climbed onto the bank where it began preening itself, occasionally flashing the white feathers on its rump. This bird belongs to the more brightly coloured race Porphyrio porphyrio bellus that is restricted to south-western Australia. Elevation: 28 m. Date added to IBC: May 17, 2018.
