Detail showing the reversed hallux.
Detalhes da observação
This bird has been present now for 5 weeks. A short way into its stay, it was noted that it has an injured left leg and there was some concern about its well-being. Today I made a special effort to take note of its current condition. The bird is the picture of health. It walks easily and quickly, and dashes about in the Tricolor manner when foraging. It no longer favors its left leg as it was doing earlier. However, if you look closely you can see that it still carries the injury. The left tarsus is still swollen or thickened, especially toward the distal end, and the forward toes seem to be somewhat stiff. In the field, I thought that I discovered today that the hallux is totally missing. But when I got home, photos revealed that what has actually happened is that the hallux is permanently folded forward under the other toes. Anyway, I got the impression that the bird has learned to walk sort of club-footed without really using its toes.
