Detalhes da observação
This white goose just showed up today 3/13 on Point Lake Drive off of Albemarle Road here in Charlotte. Debate continues about the identification of this bird, but I'm currently inclined to identify it as an immature Ross's. Features consistent with all Ross's age classes include: very small size, blue-gray base to a small bill, and a relatively straight line where bill meets face. The dull-gray legs, lack of caruncles on bill, and appearance of gray flecking on neck (noted by Taylor Piephoff in the field, but not visible to me in these photos) supports the identification as an immature... and according to field observations of known age-class Ross's by Tom Johnson, immature Ross's often show pronounced grin patches, a feature that becomes less defined with age. See Tom's detailed notes and image of a similar bird at the link below: http://www.flickr.com/photos/11933392@N02/5565817757/in/photolist-9tQgH8-b678kR-9oMokN-aR7aQR-aR7d6z-aR6JhX
