Detalhes da observação
The bird we thought was a Red Phalarope on further reflection was a Sanderling with rufous coloring remaining from breeding (alternate) plumage and a thin, long neck due to wet feathers and stretching its neck while preening. Original description when we thought it was a Red Phalarope: "Taller, longer necked, thinner and longer billed than nearby Sanderlings and plovers. Wing stripe obvious when raised wings while preening. Black legs not yellow. No black ear-eye patch. Rusty streaks on forehead, face, and neck. Dark crown, pale supercilium. Back darkly patterned. Underparts white. Bird wet from bathing. Preened while on beach. Wing stripe and dark legs rule out Wilson’s Phalarope. Buffy breast and thicker bill rule out Red-necked Phalarope. Buffy breast indicates bird is juvenile. Photos to follow"
