NOTES: Two or three birds, one with the high pitched call notes and quiet high pitched grating shrieks, the latter made when wings are flapped. This bird was seen while calling and shrieking. One or two birds off to the side make a series of calls from time to time. I did not see thes birds until later when one flew; recorded in second part of cut. The identification of these series as Purple Gallinule is by comparison with a later (US2000-015-2) recording of bird seen during what appeared to be attempted copulation. Low pitched growl/caw is probably Coot. The second part of the cut ends with a series of Purple Gallinule seen while calling in flight. The third part has call notes, whines and call series. [Throughout this recording are examples of the "Chip" Call (not too bad at 3:15-3:28), said by BNA to sound like the noise of a bicycle horn or a falsetto toot of a 17th century trumpet. There are also several "Cackles" by this species, all of which appear to have been given by a second individual (2:03-2:09, 3:59-4:02, 4:46-4:52, 7:58-8:04, 9:54-9:58, 11:01-11:06, 12:14-12:19, 12:31-12:38, 15:11-15:15, 16:32-16:38, and 24:55-24:59). The calls at 13:24, 13:57, 14:52-14:56, 20:59, and 22:305 (BEST example) appear to represent the gull-like cries of this species. Finally, a series of notes at 7:38-7:40 may have been given by this species, but I cannot be certain of this. Quality added (3-2 - weak signal throughout and much traffic noise in first two parts - possibly reaches 2-3 in places during the last five minutes) - CAM - 25 February 2005]. Number of individuals=UU2-3;. Habitat: Wetland, Pond.
