I was trying to track a black scoter when I spotted an all-brown duck amid a scoter frenzy on the left side of the flock (see long-tailed duck for where). I managed one photo revealing a blocky head and thick neck. It had a black bill with a smile of a gape—also a black shield attached to that. Adding original photo and cropped. Very distant near anchored boats.
