Detalhes da observação
Continuing male found by Bob Steele on 5 July, observed again on 6 and 7 July, though this is our first encounter. It was in the same birch thicket as previous sightings. There were many Orange-crowned Warblers calling and attending sapsucker wells, but the Hooded Warbler didn't want anything to do with that. Instead, it kept to the low, dense tangles of water birch. However, it did call quite a bit, a lower pitched, more ringing and lingering, though hollow chip note when compared to the sharp, staccato, flatter and higher pitched call note of the Orange-crowneds. It never sang. Eventually, we saw movement and once we obtained good binocular views we could see it was in heavy molt. It only appeared to have two full-length tail feathers (both white, outer), and one shorter one-third length central tail feather growing in (dark). It preened a lot, but didn't seem to improve its appearance - perhaps it had just bathed? Photos were challenging through many layers of foliage, but the call rang through repeatedly.
