Detalhes da observação
Found by Sylvia Afable on 3.26.24, thank you! Continuing at the same location, (33.904331, -117.866434). He goes between the orchid tree and the top branches of a really tall Eucalyptus just south of that, occasionally disappearing over the lake. Fascinating plumage coloring and structure, with very broad rufous-colored tail feathers, a polychromatic gorget beneath the bill sporting yellow and greenish on the outer points and mostly red-orange in the center, with pink above the bill similar to a typical Anna's but not as extensive. The body coloring appears mostly consistent with Anna's, showing a dirty pale gray-green vest, except for a limited pale rufous wash on the edges of the flanks. I only spent maybe 10 minutes at the tree since I was actually attending a work event there, but I did not observe any other hummingbirds attempt to visit the flowers on the orchid tree. Nevertheless, this male was constantly patrolling the area. What a cool bird, thanks again to Sylvia for finding him.
