Detalhes da observação
(Later, two more females on outflow from lake) A hawk flew down into Stoney Brook on opposite side of a big logjam, and immediately I heard wood duck warning cries and then a female plus a brood of seven came into virw padling slowly under sheltering logs! Incredible. Very good looks from forty feet across the creek, the fledglings are in full view under the logs but the female's head is mostly blocked so she hasn't responded to me (crouching in dull colored clothes). Fledglings are really cute, thick black band over their heads, white throat band, yellow beaks. After fifteen minutes theyve just emerged on north side and paddled over to the shore, made it to cover ok. No further sign of that hawk, thankfully. (He did emerge several minutes later.) This was definitely a memorable moment! Photos, audio and video (unfortunately only iPhone).
