Notes and photo to follow. RARE; first Union County record in terms of eBird data. For the over ten years I’ve been visiting this location, Newark Bay and the adjacent Arthur Kill have been Horned Grebe strongholds. This Winter saw counts of sixty plus birds on multiple occasions. At present, there are up to twenty birds in varying plumage present. Today, a solitary Grebe in the company of Greater Scaup caught my eye. Fifty yards away was a raft of 15 Horned Grebe. This bird had a peaked head, thinner bill and very little white on the cheeks. With Horned Grebes in molt or nearly in breeding plumage, I wavered between Eared v Horned. I left the scene without making a decision. Thankfully, I was able to digi scope an adequate picture. My great thanks to Jeff E for helping me with the id.
