Detalhes da observação
Very distant to start and frequently diving, despite distance this bird immediately stood out as a Pacific/Arctic type due to apparent smooth, streamline aesthetic both structurally and in plumage; while never close it did come in much closer during observation period for better study. Smaller and more finely built than Common Loon which were often close by for comparison, smallish rounded head smoothly joined into nape and neck, puffy nape look, delicate bill, sharp and clean demarcation between dark hindneck and white foreneck and throat, no chinstrap was noted but this can be hard to judge at distance; structure and plumage all lended to creating a distinctive serpentine head/neck look vs bulky, blocky and messier head/neck look of Common Loon; doc video (60x scope zoom + 3x optical zoom on iPhone) Quite a bit of exposed white flank was noted riding above water line, this however was also noted on nearly all the nearby Common Loons during this period and ultimately the bird was too far and too active to do much assessment on this.
