Detalhes da observação
Bird was located near where barge canal dumps into Indian River on a roost island with about 200 White Ibises. Was on darkest rocks near shoreline and then entered water and swam away. It eventually took off and flew with a belabored flight low over the water in a westerly direction. The bird was a large, heavily built sea duck. It was a dark chocolate color overall. It had a slightly lighter brown eyebrow. Bill was pale and dull straw color. The bill was large and sloped straight from top of head to bill tip. There were now bulbous shapes on bill like in scoters. It lacked the forehead shape of King Eider. Most female Common Eiders are richer brown with barring evident. This individual was darker than most females. And this bird was browner than many immature males which also have a white chest. This bird did not have any white on chest or back. And I saw no markings on wings or tail when it flew. There are probably photographs of this bird from the many birders carrying big lens cameras on the boat. It was probably about 5:30pm when this bird was seen.
