Detalhes da observação
continuing. as I approached the northeast corner of Warren Woods, I heard a woodpecker drumming somewhere right along the edge. I don't trust myself to reliably distinguish the drums of most local woodpeckers (other than YBSA and Pil); but I also hadn't heard a woodpecker drum in weeks, other than the occasional sapsucker or Pileated. acting on a hunch, in light of yesterday's multiple reports of a Red-headed Woodpecker along Freese Road, I decided to go big, and did playback from Merlin of the drum of RHWO. immediately a Red-headed started calling, right from the same spot. more than ever I wanted a visual, so I resumed searching for the bird as it continued to call and drum, with occasional encouragement from my phone. before I succeeded in spotting it drumming, however, an adult RHWO flew into view and perched just inside the edge of the woods. it continued to call for a while, then preened a little; as usual I sent out an alert about the bird, as usual it flew off while my head was down and I wasn't watching. anyway, the upshot is that I never saw the RHWO drumming, but everything points to the RHWO as the source of the drum that started all this. have typically poor Merlin app recording of calls and drums from this bird.
