Female on the left. Male on the right. This was just after the female consumed the prey item delivered by the male. Prey was passed from bill to bill. The female soon returned to the nest cavity after this image was captured.
Detalhes da observação
The waxing gibbous moon was fairly high and bright tonight. I heard the male double-hooting near the nest cavity. I turned on my low-beam headlamp and saw the male ready to delivery a prey item to the female. I'll have to research the species of the prey if possible, but the head of the thick caterpillar-like invert was trapped inside the bill while the abdominal section of the prey was arching dorsally to no avail. I estimate that it was about an inch long relative to the length of the owl's body. The head appeared greenish when held momentarily in the male's talons and the body was grayish. The anal claspers of the caterpillar are visible in the attached images. The female was actually outside of the cavity when the male passed the prey to her from bill to bill. They perched on the same branch about ten feet from the cavity during the prey exchange. She quickly received and devoured the prey. He attempted to extend his bill to her again, but she moved away. She entered the cavity about four minutes later. She perched for several seconds with her head inside the cavity before completely reentering it.
