A very late, adult American Robin first seen by Brian Daniels was here photographed by Curtis A. Marantz on 3 June 2023 at Chiriaco Summit, Riverside County, California.
Detalhes da observação
I think it was Daniels who first spotted the robin when it flew up from the lawn, but with some effort I was able to get a few photos. This bird was relatively quiet, but I did hear it give a soft, "chup" call. This was a large thrush with a short bill that was of medium depth as it extended from the base to a blunt tip along a relatively straight culmen. The crown was rounded on a head of unremarkable size, the neck was short and inconspicuous, and the body was plump, full-chested, and with a posture that was roughly diagonal with the tail held downward in the plane of the body. I thought the tail was of medium length and parallel-sided, but I cannot now recall noting the shape and the tip, and I have no recollection of noting the wing structure. The legs were unremarkable for a large thrush in both their length and mass. This bird had a blackish hood that contrasted sharply with a white eyering that was broken and of a somewhat irregular shape. The upperparts and wings were also relatively dark, but more grayish than black, and contrasting with the darker hood. I also thought the tail was dark, but at one point I thought I saw at least some white at the corners distally. The underparts were mostly a deep reddish in color, but I cannot recall noting in the field the patterns on either the throat or the undertail coverts on a bird that I saw in the shade and mostly from behind. The bill was at least mostly yellow, but the eyes were dark, as apparently were the legs
