An immature male Pyrrhuloxia that has been wintering at this site since first found on 3 November 2023 by John Green was here photographed by Curtis A. Marantz on 22 April 2023 at Lake Cahuilla Veterans Regional Park, La Quinta, Riverside County, California.
Detalhes da observação
The wintering Pyrrhuloxia was one of the first birds that I heard on my arrival, and between 6:30 am and 8:00 am, it was conspicuous and easily followed despite moving widely given the songs and calls that it gave regularly. I took quite a photos and studied this bird at distances down to three meters, generally in the shade, but occasionally in the sun. I did not write a new description for today, in part because my impression was that this bird was similar in its appearance relative to my previous visits with the exception of the color of the bill, which now appeared to be a deep yellow color essentially throughout, though possibly with the culmen narrowly darker. I was a little surprised that the plumage overall was still sandy-brown rather than gray, and with gray tones limited to the superciliary region and the sides of the neck. My impression was that the red in the underparts may have been somewhat broader in its extent, though it was still clouded with sandy-brown on the breast.
