Detalhes da observação
While burning part of Rollins Ranch today I noticed a buteo diving and rising above the fire. Immediately it struck me as something interesting as it had thinner and longer wings than I’m used to seeing on RTHAs or RSHA. Upon getting a look at the multicolored underwing I had suspicious it was a juvenile swainsons. Unfortunately, I did not have bins on me at the time so I just eyeballed it, second guessing myself as it swooped in and out of smoke. Later, I noticed the bird again and snapped some iPhone shots of it in flight. I was going to go home to get my binoculars but my boss actually had some on him luckily (thanks Matt!) I was then able to get clear looks at the 4 primary feathers or ‘fingers’ while in flight. Bird later landed in a tree where I got better digibinned photos. As the fire became more concentrated got great looks. Was chasing down grasshoppers as swarms of them fled the fireline. Dark morph bird. Pics.
