Detalhes da observação
Second-calendar possibly male, found by Pat Lonergan several days beforehand. No sign of it initially on arrival at the carpark. Appeared from the North and joined a female Common Scoter about 300 metres offshore. Later drifted back north and moved within 100m of the shoreline 400m North of carpark. Slightly larger body size cf. Common Scoter. Neck much thicker. Head more blockier like a Surf Scoter, head/bill profile quite reminiscent of a Common Eider at times. Loral patch had a more brown wash cf. whiter and larger ear patch. Some mottling around the lower side and browner on lower section. Black feathering coming through on the face below the eye all the around under the chin. Feather pattern at the base of bill extremely difficult to make out especially at any distance. More angular and reaching further towards base of bill. Bridge on bill not as obvious for WWS but was moderately convex and the bill did look particularly hooked appearanceat the tip. Nostrils looked relatively large. Definite pink patch at the very tip of bill and a pale subterminal band before the black nail. Flanks lighter brown than upperparts. Underparts (everything below the waterline) even lighter brown than flanks with a contrast to the breast. White secondaries.
