Detalhes da observação
Unmistakable species found and photographed by homeowner Russell Stewart this morning. Foraging in row of spruce trees during my visit; Mr. Stewart observed it going to the feeder on his porch and perched in a birch tree earlier today. Woodpecker with all black bill, dark feet and legs, and dark pupil surrounded by pale yellow irides. Black feathering on face surrounds eye and black also at base of bill. Hind crown and upper nape shows a large, distinct red patch. Black on mid-crown extends onto face. Forehead and throat very pale yellow (almost whitish). Entire back, most of wings, and tail black. Some white visible on the folded wing. Rump and upper tail-coverts whitish. Upper breast blackish with ragged streaking onto lower breast and belly. Flanks tinged with pale yellow. Under tail-coverts not seen. Bird was calling when I first arrived. Calls are very familiar to me from living in California and Arizona, and recently heard them while visiting Arizona and southern California this spring.
