Detalhes da observação
Lifer, and my first shearwater! Very unusual to be so close to shore, but this seems to be occurring right now across the mid-Atlantic coast. I saw two individuals from the inlet; one was at 11:00 and one was at 2:00 if looking out perpendicular to the coast. After that initial view of the two, only one remained that I could see. I spent about 90 minutes scanning before finding the two, almost simultaneously. They were quite far out, but their soaring, wheeling flight was immediately distinctive and so awesome! At a distance, they looked brown overall with a mostly white belly. The wings were long and fairly narrow, had a straight to slightly crooked appearance, and had brown and white underwing. Later, one came closer to the inlet and I was able to see a distinct cap, thin black bill, white on the neck, brown smudges on the belly, and dark undertail coverts.
