Detalhes da observação
Lifer! Incredible looks at a breeding plumage adult, feeding on the mudflat with lots of other shorebirds. Very active, busily running around and picking in the mud. Stayed more up on the mud, than in the water. Did come down at one point into the water, cleaned up a little bit and preened. Then it went right back to the mud and continued foraging. Same size as Dunlin. Black legs and black bill which is decurved with a fine tip. Orange rusty head darker chestnut below with some black markings. Lots more black interspersed with chestnut feathering on the mantle. Coverts pale gray and appeared pretty worn. White vent with a few black tips to feathers. Diagnostic white rump seen well as it was preening in the water, also with a few black tips to uppertail coverts. Plain gray tail. Did not hear it call. Viewed with lots of other birders, found by the Pierces earlier in the day. Thanks to them and also Greg Cook for calling me and letting me know about the bird!
