Detalhes da observação
***very rare; spotted by Matt foraging on concrete walls on the water reclamation basin. After a couple minutes of viewing, it flew west to alight on wires and the sides of one of the buildings, then away towards the treeline out of sight. Immediately recognized as a Myiarchus sp. flycatcher, plumage muted gray overall, pale gray face and brownish wings. Faint lemon wash on lower belly and olivaceous back. Brightest color was rufous bases of primaries. White edging to coverts, creating doubled white wing bars, as well as pale edges to tertials and secondaries. Structurally similar to Great-crested, but smaller and shorter-tailed with noticeably slimmer bill. No vocalizations. Likely forced by 19 F overnight temps to the warmer microclimate created by the wastewater ponds, which often concentrate insects and the songbirds that predate them. ***Please note that this bird was found at a restricted site, not accessible by other birders. Birded today with permission for the Charlotte Christmas Bird Count.
