Thick-billed Murre ( Uria lomvia) Mount Desert Island High School parking lot Feb 2 2016 MJGood Notice the shimmering water around this bird. Sa soon as it thit the water the bird began shuffling the water underneath the bird, one photo showing the foot slightly out of water. This would be the waterproofing and reshuffling of air. It made a few dips with some water on the head and back. These motions lead to a calm and disciplined dive which I am glad to have witnessed. When many are about it is not easy to understand these tremendous dives they are capable of. One one dive close to or over one minute before it emerged not far from a loon.
Detalhes da observação
My question, like yours, is why in the MDI High School parking lot...? When released it swam underwater over 250 feet coming up and flapping its wings before moving towards open ocean. Several TBMU had been reported for Maine. It appears that a movement was taking place and this bird overshot the ocean. Upon release, it never showed any signs of distress and very capably disappeared into it's watery world. Like any Alcid, it is not possible to fly if stuck on land... in the ocean it preformed like a healthy bird and happy.
