Fluffy Coot chicks preening on their nest - close view. Eurasian Coots (Fulica atra) are common waterbirds in Europe, Asia and Australia. Coots have lobed rather than webbed feet and thrive in wetlands with submerged or floating waterweeds. It is Springtime in Australia, and this pair of Coots has successfully hatched five chicks in their floating nest made of reeds. In Australia, Eurasian Coots feed mainly on vegetable matter, diving to gather filaments of green algae or grazing on grass on land. They also take some animal prey including insets, small fish and worms. Both Coot parents feed their chicks and the chicks compete with each other to be the first to obtain food offered by one of their parents. Four of the chicks are in their nest, preening after returning to the nest after swimming and feeding. One abruptly left the nest and swam towards one of its parents to obtain food. The birds calling in the background are mostly Brown Honeyeaters. Elevation: 7 m. Date added to IBC: October 7, 2018.
