A Magellanic Penguin preening its chick at its nesting burrow . The Magellanic Penguin (Spheniscus magellanicus) occurs on the coasts of Chile, Argentina and the Falkland Islands. Magellanic Penguins nest in burrows or amongst Tussac in the Falkland Islands, and their donkey-like braying call may be heard for most of the summer breeding season. They tend to be shyer than other penguin species, but these birds at Leopard Beach on Carcass Island were calm, and seemed interested in the low numbers of people visiting their rookery. This Magellanic Penguin chick had left the nesting burrow to defaecate, and on its return its parent preened its backside!. Elevation: 8 m. Date added to IBC: February 10, 2019.
