non-breeding male watched as he was being checked and monitored during the ongoing research and protection of the Chatham.....Island Taiko, showing underwingThis is a non-breeding male that was a chick from the 2010/2011 season. Originally from burrow (S88) in the Tuku Nature Reserve. On April 29 2011 he was transferred as a chick from his Tuku burrow to a burrow (SW20) in Sweetwater, where he stayed for almost a month before fledging on May 26 2011; having spent 14-15 days on the surface. He is banded E113889 and has a PTT tag inserted with a short ID of 1713. This is the first time he has been recorded anywhere since fledging. He’s back in only three years which is pretty early, normally he would be expected back during the next season. If he finds a mate this year he will probably attempt to breed next year, though he could just as likely spend next year pairing up and sorting out a burrow as well and then breed the following year. The lower number of females having returned is slowing some of these guys down from breeding as they cannot find mates. With 19 confirmed breeding pairs and another 6 possible pairs and 40 odd non-breeders left in the entire world this really is one of the worlds rarest seabirds. Elevation: 235 m. Date added to IBC: June 23, 2016.
