Detalhes da observação
***VERY RARE; 6th or 7th record in Maine; continuing in this area from when it was first observed by a non-birder resident on 9/7 and reported to Maine Audubon days later | elegant raptor with long wings, strongly forked tail, pale body, and dark flight feathers; white head, body, underwing coverts, and undertail coverts; dark primaries, secondaries, and tail; two-toned navy blue upperparts; darker on the lesser coverts and primaries, with a more pale blue-gray on the rest of the back and wings; small head with petite dark bill and gray face. First observed by DH at around 9:30am, soaring to the east over The Lane. We watched it for a minute or so as it slowly made its way south, seemingly following the Dennys River. After disappearing for a few minutes it reappeared, flying west, eventually passing over our heads at 44.902595, -67.238434 within a few hundred feet overhead and slowly continued on, catching and eating dragonflies as it went. CB and WG had gone to look for the bird nearby and came back for some fleeting views of the STKI as it turned back SE to follow the Dennys River again. This bird seems to be spending most of its time associated with the river, where it presumably is able to find the most dragonflies to forage on. There are a few good locations to try and observe the kite from, including a parking area along the river at 44.895910, -67.227023, the nearby Salmon Club Road, which is a nice walk down along the river, and the Dennysville Cemetery at the end of Cemetery Road, which serves as somewhat of a highpoint.
