Detalhes da observação
Heard by Cindy. Single syllable Coo notes. Somewhat distant, coming from back woods/meadow area. Prior to Cindy identifying it as a yellow-billed cuckoo song, I had heard it when it was either even more distant or singing in a softer volume. It piqued my curiosity as it momentarily suggested to me a muted American Bittern, however Cindy dispelled that notion with her definitive identification when it was closer or louder. I recorded it. The background ambient bird songs, distant roosters and towhee calls are louder on the sound file, but if you listen when the lower blips of the sound spectrum play, you will make out the cuckoo notes. This song was different from the black-billed cuckoo we heard at the Pole Farm last June 30th. This song was widely-spaced single note Coos in groups of eight or so before repeating. The black-billed's song was a short-spaced set of three or four note Coos in groups of three or four sets before pausing and repeating. Also, this song was very similar to although more muted than the yellow-billed song we heard at the Negri-Nepote grasslands when we were chasing the Henslow's sparrow last June 28th.
