Detalhes da observação
*7/6/18 - There has been much discussion lately in the Sarasota birding community about some terns showing up on our beaches in the past few weeks, and it was suggested I take a closer look at this bird. After looking more carefully at the field marks I am uploading additional photos and changing from Common to Roseate Tern, a much rarer species here, threatened in Florida, endangered in the NE and Canada. Common and Roseate Terns are very difficult to distinguish in their immature phases but there are a couple of good clues obvious on this transitioning bird. First, its primaries have white trailing edges, and second, and diagnostic...the tail is longer than the wings, and in one of the photos you can see the long outer tail feathers, or streamers, are longer than the wings at rest....diagnostic for this species. Medium sized tern with very long black bill, partial black cap and nape, reddish-orange legs, dark carpal bar, and interesting rosy beige spot on its white chest. Standing alone on beach near shore before joining large flock of Laughing Gulls flying south to jetty.
