Detalhes da observação
All birds heard along the Boardwalk along Hawk Ridge. The first bird called several times from a ravine northeast of the boardwalk at 9 PM. We walked down and listened at the end of the boardwalk where we didn't hear any others. We then headed back towards the parking lot. Soon, we heard another calling from along the boardwalk. This bird called for about 5 minutes straight and let us approach within 10-15 feet while it perched on a fallen tree below the boardwalk. This bird flew off eventually, and we heard another (third) off to the southwest. The second bird was far enough away from the first one to be different (based on GPS coordinates taken on my phone). We then heard two birds calling from two separate directions at the boardwalk's parking lot about 0.2 miles away from the first three birds. Definitely the easiest I've had Eastern Whip-poor-wills in western Iowa and eastern Nebraska, and I would assume it speaks for the habitat quality at this park.
