NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 19. Bulk reel: 422. Weather: Fair, clear. 203 tape. R. v. culminatus x citreolaemus. This particular region is not covered by Phelps checklist but is between Sta. Elena, Merida (= citreolaemus, Phelps) and El Cerron - El Cogollal (= culminatus, Phelps). The birds seen tended to have breast more white than yellow (therefore > citreolaemus) but both white-breasted and yellow-breasted birds seen. (But this one was quite yellow.) In a pair seen, apparently mated, one had white (or less yellow) breast, the other yellow-breast. (This pair is recorded in part b), which followed after the conflict period with the third bird.) The "white-breasted" bird (the male?) was fighting over a period of 10-15' with a third bird; both frequently fell in locked combat, bills locked, etc. The recording of a) may be same bird as first in b) and when it was very excited due to the conflict. a) Natural song. Quality:P 2-. Level: +5. b) This is the white- (or more white-) breasted bird. Note: Bill open, then sound starts and then bill closes "on the sound." Quality: 1. Level: +5. The focus is now on the other bird of the pair which has a quite yellow breast. (The bill doesn't open as widely as the other bird's; this may be female. See above.) Quality: 1. Level: +5.
