NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 25. Bulk reel: 239; Extra cut(s) on bulk reel: 240; Extra cut length: 1:48 Elevation: 380-400 m. Weather: Fair. Song by pair. Female sings "long two-figure" phrase and male multi-figure phrase. Reflector focused on female. Female gave long three-figure phrases on one or more occasions but I didn't manage to record any. A third bird sings short two-figure phrases. Quality: 1. Level: 0. 139 tape. 3 3/4 ips. Std. Then, after playback. Quality: 1-2, 1. Level: +2. 139 tape. 3 3/4 ips std. and 7.5 ips. Std. After recording this cut I whistled "female song" and one particular bird flew back and forth with my imitations but did not sing. This bird was then collected (= female #8771). After this no further "female song" was heard from the bird left, which remained in the area (I don't know what happened to the third bird) and sang two-figure song; but when I then played the recorded "female song" this bird responded, singing multi-figure song in duet with the recording. This bird also collected (= male #8770). Had moderately large testes (L.T. = 5.5 x 3) Note: 18/VIII/74 - ~ 16 km E of Guasdualito, Apure: In response to long whistling "female song" (and long one-figure, followed by "long two-figure" @ slightly higher pitch than male song) a male that had been singing some 50 m. away came to my vicinity, which happened to be near an active nest of Phacellodomus rufifrons. Before the cuckoo reacted vocally it was recognized visually by the thornbirds and immediately chased away. Also, in the ensuing period, whenever the cuckoo sang it was constantly chased and harassed, even when it was as mucha as 30 m. away from the thornbirds'nest. I renewed "work" with this bird when, after some delay, I heard a real male-female duet. In response to my whistling female song, two birds appeared. One of them seemed to react the way a female would and as I knew the position of the male I felt this most probably was a female. I collected it and it was in fact a female with active ovaries and one large developing yolk.
