NOTES: Neotropical Institute Cut # 13. Bulk reel: 200 This recording, which doesn't sound like much, is kept mainly as a record of the event. Quality: "2." Level: +3. 203 tape. LN. A steep down-hill glide of 100-150 m length by one of two (a pair) pauxi; the bird apparently wanted to cross the open space between the trees above the road and those below; this is quite a distance @ this spot. This recording was obtained incidentally while working on Penelope argyrotis; some quiet calls of which are heard @ the beginning and one bird gave a call of alarm (?) when the pauxi "rushed" down; a male guan which had been giving ascending whistles, stopped abruptly when pauxi rushed down. The second pauxi did not go down to join the other, apparently being too timid to launch so out into the open; it was apparently aware of my presence, while the first bird may not have been. NOTE: I heard no pauxi song in this region at or before this time. Several times I've seen one or two birds in this region (the bird of Cut 12 may be one of them) but only rarely heard song here. (NOTE: 15/V/73 I did hear song by the concrete bridge.) NOTE: Dick Zusi told be a pauxi was singing regularly in the region of the upper water supply. I too have heard one near there; also one near km 18.5. Therefore apparently > four singing males in the general region.
