Continuing bird found yesterday, to the best of my knowledge, by E. Gross. Calling, singing a bit, and generally showing well at the base of the pines. Gave sharp "pwhit" calls frequently, which enabled me to find it easily. At three different times, it sang versus of its short and diagnostic "chebec" song. When I first arrived, it was high in the pines, but soon came down much lower where it afforded great views for the duration of my visit. Small, compact Empidonax. Short wings/pp. Dark contrasty wing panel with dark wings set off by bright whitish wing bars and edges to tertials. Gray face/head/mantle, with tinges of green throughout. White throat, and yellowish belly/sides. Smallish bill. Unsurprisingly, the bird appeared very different colored when seen in various lighting conditions (out in the open in diffuse overcast light, versus in the shadows, etc.) My photos reflect this variability. Very yellow WEFL nearby for direct comparison. Also, watched the LEFL flick its tail upwards often. Cool bird, and only my second for MRN.
