While sitting on the bench to the north of the Marina store waiting on the caracara I heard a dry fairly high pitched call. Repeated coming from the tree behind me. My first though was a blackpoll but not quite right. I walked around the tree and followed quick movement in the tree until finally got a good but quick look. A view straight on from beneath with the sun behind me through binoculars. The bird was very small with a solid dark conical bill. The color was a cool medium brown gray with no warm tones. Around the face there was a small amount of black feathering, not strong or very much and didn't form eyelines or facelines just a bit blotchy. It flew and I followed it with eyes across the road to the ground below the bushes next to the maintenance yard (I think). It hopped into the bushes and I never saw it again. As it flew I noticed no wingbars or any pattern or color. It seemed short-winged and short-tailed. A bit later I heard it call, saw movement but couldn't get on it. But I was able to record one call. I am attaching an original and filtered version. I have seen black-faced grassquit several times and everything seemed to match. But I am not very familiar with them. We considered indigo bunting but the call didn't match quite right. After talking to a few experts I felt comfortable enough to put the report in, but would love more feedback since this is not my home turf.
